NSBS cannot deny TWU accreditation

The Nova Scotia Supreme Court has released the decision of Justice Campbell in the Trinity Western University law school accreditation dispute. The Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society does not have the authority to impose conditions on TWU’s policy on student conduct.

“The NSBS can only legally do what it has been given the power to do by legislation. It acts under the authority of the Legal Profession Act to regulate the practice of law in Nova Scotia. That act does not give the NSBS the power to require universities or law schools to change their policies. Its jurisdiction does not reach that far.” Campbell, J.

But for TWU’s community covenant that prohibits sexual intimacy outside traditionally defined marriages, the NSBS would have accredited the law school.
