Travel Insurance – Read the Fine Print

Travel Insurance, as with all health insurance, has exclusion clauses. Before you buy, read the fine print; it could save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. A couple from Surrey, BC, recently learned this hard lesson when travelling to the US (http://ow.ly/103R0H).

If you have a pre-existing medical condition your travel insurance provider may require disclosure of the condition before approving your policy. Some insurance providers may not afford you coverage at all when you disclose the condition so you may have to shop around. This is inconvenient but it’s a small price to pay should you require medical attention in another country. The couple from Surrey were fortunate – they had group health insurance that paid for the medical expenses but this reduced their lifetime coverage significantly and there will be less money available for medical benefits in their future.

Read the fine print and have the insurance agent explain it to you. If you do not understand the legalese talk to a lawyer before you buy.
